TDJ: Harry Wohlfart (Mannheim, DE)
Many dancers might still know Harry, even though he doesn’t live close to Frankfurt anymore: He has been dancing since 1988 (starting in Stuttgart) and began DJing in 1993, initially in Stuttgart and later from around 1995 in Frankfurt. For approximately 16 years, his two tango homes were the Romanfabrik in Frankfurt and the Tango-Bar in Höchst, where he served as the local home DJ alongside a few friends.
It was only quite late, around 2002, when he started traveling for dancing and DJing in numerous locations across Europe and the US. He amassed a vast collection of music, actively purchasing as much as he could acquire. With this, he constructed a comprehensive database for personal use—long before other databases were made available. He always strived to include music from as many orchestras as possible and meticulously described each piece following his own system. This meticulous organization facilitated easy access to an appropriate selection for the specific situation on the dance floor. In recent years, Harry has gradually replaced the majority of his tracks with ones of better quality.
Harry’s style is classical, aiming to immerse dancers in a state of flow to enhance their enjoyment of the music and savor its essence completely. Don’t expect non- or neo-tangos from him. Although some are pleasant (and he occasionally plays them 😉), he finds it challenging to instill the desired mood in dancers with these genres. The same applies to the current trend of playing orchestral music primarily composed for listening, featuring singers performing arias instead of more danceable material.
